About Next Run

Next Run is a tactical role-playing roguelike video game. This means you’ll enter automatically generated worlds and face of good challenges. Even the option for ‘Replay’ is available. Before getting started, let’s take a closer look at the game.

Note: You can also check out other games of the same genre on our website, such as DoD: Roguelike RPG or Dungeon Slasher: Roguelike.

Introduce about Next Run

Next Run is a tactical roguelike game from developer Clarus Victoria. You don’t just fight in a preordained manner. You need to constantly make decisions and act to survive. From the outset, the game’s atmosphere struck me as rather profound; you aren’t merely maneuvering your character to fight monsters, you also have to consider what to do next. Playing the same game again will be different each time.

After playing for a while, the most noticeable thing is that the game puts you in a position of choice, and each choice has its own consequences. In reality, during gameplay, there were times I chose to fight monsters head-on, but a few turns later I had to switch to gathering materials, upgrading equipment, or building up my land to become stronger. This feeling prevented me from playing mechanically in a single path; I always had to calculate and consider each step.

Turn-based roguelike gameplay

Next Run is unique, no 2 plays are alike at Next Run. Every time you run the game, the map, the situations, and the enemies all change. When I first started my run I was a little confused because I did not know which way to go first. Should I attack? Dodge? Gather resources? Or straight-up charge into the monsters? However, after a few games, I started to get the hang of having to evaluate the situation and decide each turn.

In reality, during gameplay, there were times when I played quite smoothly, gathered good items, and my team grew stronger quickly. But there are also runs where you encounter difficult enemies after just a few steps, forcing you to use all sorts of strategies to survive. This feeling arises because the game doesn’t allow you to rely on a fixed formula. Every time you re-enter, you have to rethink everything from scratch; you can’t play by habit.

What I find appealing is that each failure doesn’t discourage me, but instead sparks my curiosity: “What if I choose a different approach next time?” This roguelike quality is what gives Next Run its lasting appeal, as there’s always a reason to replay, just to see what new challenges the world will present this time.

Freedom to choose your gameplay style

One feature that makes Next Run quite different is that the game doesn’t force you to solve everything through combat. When I first started playing, I thought you just had to fight every monster you encountered. But after playing for a while, I started to notice that there are many other ways: using money to bribe enemies, avoiding combat, focusing on gathering resources, or gradually building up your strength before confronting them again.

In reality, during gameplay, there were times when I felt my team was weak and it was easy to lose, so I chose to circle around, gather items, and upgrade first. On other occasions, I risked attacking early to gain an advantage. This feeling arose because the game always presents open choices, without a clear “right answer.” Every decision has its price.

I like the feeling of having complete control. It makes each run feel like a unique story, created by myself. Some runs are focused on combat, while others are more like survival, accumulating resources little by little. For me, this freedom makes Next Run feel unconstrained, and each playthrough has a different feel.

Character class system and team development with unique styles

Next Run offers a diverse selection of character classes, such as fighters, sorcerers, and dark sorcerers. At the start of my game, I choose a random class to play with. However, after further experimentation, I decided to test out a few more classes and realized they felt very different.

In reality, some classes are great for direct combat, making you want to rush in wherever you go. But others force you to play slowly, maintain distance, and carefully plan each turn. This feeling arises because the skills and stats of each class clearly affect the gameplay, not just changing names for fun.

Furthermore, team building and upgrades also made me think a lot. I had to choose whether to invest in damage, defense, or special skills. Sometimes I upgraded incorrectly, and I felt noticeably out of breath later on. But it was those times that helped me understand the game better. For me, this character class and development system gives Next Run depth.

Graphics and sound

Next Run isn’t the kind of game that makes me exclaim “wow” immediately because of its stunning graphics, but rather the kind that you find appealing after a while. The visual style is quite dark, with a fantasy feel mixed with gloom, fitting the context of a world being invaded by dark forces. When I first started, I found the characters and environments to be drawn simply, without too many small details, but enough to recognize each area and each type of enemy.

Regarding sound, Next Run takes a rather restrained approach. The background music is usually somber, slightly heavy in atmosphere, and after listening for a while, it suits the feeling of survival and tension of each run. After playing for a while, I noticed that the music isn’t overly loud, but it’s always there to set the mood. In fact, during gameplay, when facing strong enemies, the background music makes me feel more nervous even before fighting.

Next Run isn’t just about combat; it also includes elements of map exploration and personal team development. Each playthrough creates a slightly different map with different challenges, making me always curious to “play again and see what happens.” With its blend of strategy, exploration, and roguelike elements, this isn’t an easy game, but it’s enough to make players pause, think, and try again many times.
